Description
Do you find yourself unsure where to begin when writing a paper, or overwhelmed by how to organize your ideas? Outlining is one of the most powerful—and underused—tools for producing clear, coherent, and compelling academic work. This workshop introduces multiple outlining strategies, from traditional linear formats to visual mapping and question-driven approaches. You’ll learn how outlining can help you organize your ideas, synthesize complex research, and create a logical structure before you begin drafting. Whether you are preparing a research article, thesis chapter, PowerPoint presentation, or conference poster, this session will help you choose an outlining method that fits your thinking style and show you how to transform an outline into a strong, fully developed piece of writing.

Learning Objectives
Participants will:
• Understand the purpose of outlining and how it supports clarity, organization, and argumentation in academic writing
• Compare different outlining strategies (linear, visual, and questioning) and identify which approach aligns with their writing goals
• Practice generating and expanding an outline into a coherent structure that can guide drafting

Instructions
Please come with your own research question or working thesis statement, which you will use to sketch a rough outline for a portion of your work.
