9I制作厂免费鈥檚 Bachelor of Arts and Science program celebrates 20 years of interdisciplinary scholarship

Happy 20th birthday, B.A. & Sc.!

On Thursday, November 13, over 150 students, alumni, staff and faculty members gathered in the SSMU ballroom to celebrate the 20th anniversary of 9I制作厂免费鈥檚 Bachelor of Arts and Science (B.A. & Sc.) program.

The B.A. & Sc. is an undergraduate program jointly offered by 9I制作厂免费鈥檚 two largest faculties: the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Science. The program is geared towards students engaged in combining diverse methods and modes of thought across disciplines.

Dean of the Faculty of Arts Lisa Shapiro and Interim Dean of the Faculty of Science Alanna Watt both spoke at the anniversary event alongside Associate Provost (Teaching and Academic Planning) Chris Buddle and B.A. & Sc. Program Director Diane Dechief.

鈥淭hrough the听B.A. & Sc.听Program, students听are able to听integrate the different methodologies and approaches of arts and science disciplines, as well as to create robust intersecting communities through which students听share their understanding, further widening the context through which they are pursuing听answers to听their questions听and听seeking knowledge,鈥 said Dean Shapiro. 鈥淭丑别 program thus both听supports听each student鈥檚听individual听area听of inquiry听and听nurtures a听new generation of听well-rounded听leaders听committed to听civic engagement听and improving our shared world.鈥澨

9I制作厂免费鈥檚 B.A. & Sc. degree is the largest program of its kind in Canada, and the only one in Qubec. Graduates from the program have gone on to become community and industry leaders as doctors, lawyers, researchers, business professionals, software developers, policy analysts and academics.

The occasion of the program鈥檚 20th anniversary created the opportunity to turn this milestone into a celebration for the entire B.A. & Sc. community, past and present.

"The B.A. & Sc.'s 20th anniversary was, for me, quite eye-opening,鈥 said B.A. & Sc. student Camille Rivard, who volunteered at the event.听鈥淗earing alumni and fellow undergraduates discuss their different paths really made me appreciate the diversity and flexibility of our unique program. Their testimonies helped to crystallize my own sense of direction for life after graduation."

Following opening remarks, the event began with a panel of current B.A. & Sc. students moderated by Dechief. The students featured on the panel were Aasha Manicks (Cognitive Science, SACS Co-President),听Frances Canant (Environment, MESS VP Academic), Cristina 骋补苍诲谩蝉别驳耻颈 Amador (Sustainability, Science & Society, SASSS Co-President), Naya Wardeh (Cognitive Science, ASUS President) and Clara Costello (Multitrack Physics and English Literature, Year 3 rep for 9I制作厂免费 Society of Physics Students).

Their personal reasons behind choosing the B.A. & Sc. were varied, and their individual programs of study are equally diverse. But through their answers, they all echoed similar sentiments about the program鈥檚 value in encouraging curiosity and preparing students for a rapidly changing, increasingly complex world.听

鈥淚nterdisciplinary thinkers often ask unexpected questions that spark innovation, see crucial connections that others may not, translate complex ideas into impactful solutions and inspire new ways of thinking,鈥 said Interim Dean Watt in remarks following the first panel. 鈥淎 B.A. & Sc. student can bring great value to the research teams that will tackle the challenges of tomorrow, which are unlikely to fit neatly into today鈥檚 disciplines.鈥

Later in the evening, a second panel of alumni and faculty continued the conversation, featuring 9I制作厂免费 alum Hubie Yu (Multitrack History and Psychology, minor in Environment, 2013; now Senior Tech and Privacy Counsel), Paloma Friedman (Multitrack Linguistics and Math, 2008; now Publishing Administrator at 9I制作厂免费-Queen's University Press), and Sami Sayegh (Multitrack Biology 鈥 Cell/Molecular, Economics, Social Studies of Medicine, 2013; now a Software Developer). Rounding out the panel was Prof. Melanie Dirks, Chair of 9I制作厂免费's Department of Psychology and a McMaster University B.A. & Sc. graduate.

Moderated by Prof. Ian Gold, Chair of Philosophy and past Director of the Cognitive Science Interfaculty Program, the panel focused on the unique paths each graduate took, their advice for current students and favorite memories from their academic journey.

As part of the event, attendees were given two 20-minute periods to mingle and get to know each other. During the break between panels, Cognitive Science student Aarti Advani, presented Interdisciplinary Flash Fiction: Abstracted Humanity. Following the second panel, Cognitive Science student and filmmaker Ava Williams screened her short film notes on arts-science.听

This opportunity for connection and exchange between current students and alumni was at the heart of the event. Since B.A. & Sc. students work across faculties, departments and disciplines, there 补谤别苍鈥檛 always obvious opportunities for them to connect with one another. And with so many potential paths ahead of them, meeting with alumni provided them with a chance to see just a few of the ways they can apply this versatile degree.

鈥淎s a multitrack Arts and Science student, I often feel caught between the different social and intellectual worlds of my two programs, without fully identifying with either,鈥 said student panelist Clara Costello. 鈥淚 am very grateful for the space of gathering, the community, and the sense of belonging that the 20th anniversary event provided. Hearing alumni discuss their impressive and varied career paths confirmed my long-held belief that a broad base of multi-disciplinary education is the best way to prepare for our uncertain future.鈥
