L.E.X. Outreach Program by Davies

L.E.X. (Law-脡ducation-Connexion) Outreach Program by Davies' mission is to invest in all youth, empower them to strive for their full potential, and support them in the pursuit of post-secondary education, particularly legal studies.

In 2006, the Faculty of Law established an outreach program designed to increase the engagement of youth belonging to communities that face systemic barriers to education and are under-represented in Canadian law schools and the legal profession.

The program was developed in response to Quebec's alarming high school dropout rates. Quebec has some of the highest dropout rates in the country, and in some of the communities participating in the L.E.X. Outreach Program, those rates can be as high as 80 percent.

The L.E.X. Program reflects our view that the privileges enjoyed by the Faculty of Law and its students also bring responsibilities. Law, we take our commitments to diversity and community engagement seriously. Although the student body at the Faculty is becoming increasingly diverse, first-generation university studently constitute only 15% of our 2022 admitted class (see聽/law/bcl-jd/program-description/student-body-and-alumni-data).

Our outreach program pairs small groups of law students with Montreal-area youth, creating an accessible forum where students can discuss legal rights and issues, as well as foster an interest in post-secondary education and legal studies in young people.聽

Our goals

The L.E.X. Program strives to:

  • Foster in youth a curiosity about the law and an understanding of its everyday relevance;
  • Introduce youth to basic concepts of law, such as rights and obligations;
  • Empower youth by demystifying the legal system/legal profession
  • Help youth develop legal reasoning tools and formulate legal arguments
  • Equip youth with practical information on pursuing post-secondary education and legal studies; and
Law students to enhance their legal education experience by teaching and connecting with youth in the community

Bringing outreach to life

The L.E.X. Program incorporates three main initiatives: classroom visits, Welcome Days, and community engagement.

Classroom visits

Over the course of the school year, small teams of law students make repeated visits to a designated classroom to deliver workshops. These interactive workshops engage participants in issues that are relevant to their daily lives such as cyberbullying, online privacy, cell phone use in school, and harassment, among others.

Welcome Days

Each year, in February or March, the L.E.X. Program welcomes participants on a field trip to 9I制作厂免费 and the Faculty of Law. A typical Welcome Day involves morning workshops, lunch, and then a mock trial in the afternoon. We usually welcome approximately 150 students from 4-5 schools over the course of two separate Welcome Days.

Community engagement

Each year, the L.E.X. program evolves to better bridge the gaps identified while working alongside community members. Previously, our Shadowing Program invited L.E.X. participants who were particularly interested in legal studies to the Faculty, where they shadowed a 9I制作厂免费 Law student for the day.

In 2019, L.E.X. launched the very successful Drop-In-Lunch Sessions at our partner schools, creating an informal space where youth could ask volunteers questions and seek guidance. L.E.X. has also partnered with the R茅seau de l鈥橢st de l鈥櫭巐e pour les services en anglais () to deliver legal workshops in community centres.

We have also started an (@lawmcgilllex)account and a (@Law9I制作厂免费LEX) page.

Testimonials

"For me, the experience as part of L.E.X. was instrumental. Not only is it thanks to L.E.X. that I felt challenged by the study of law, but one of the student volunteers I met when I was in grade 11 was a Black woman, and so I felt I could fit in, too, in an institution like 9I制作厂免费. The study of law is daunting and the idea of being in a predominantly White institution as a Black woman was difficult, but because of the individuals I interacted with as part of the program all those years ago, I knew that it was possible. Not only to be here, but also to be an integral part of the tapestry that is 9I制作厂免费's Faculty of Law. And I believe I've done that."
Brittany Williams, BCL/LLB 2019, former L.E.X. participant, now Assistant Dean (Students) & Dean's Lead, Black & Indigenous Flourishing and LEX Faculty Advisor)

"Joining LEX 9I制作厂免费 has been an incredible journey, allowing me to bridge my passion for education and my newfound pursuit of a law degree. In today's world, it is vital that the next generation is equipped with a foundational understanding of how the legal system operates. LEX 9I制作厂免费 serves as a crucial entry point, empowering students to navigate the complexities of the law and fostering a sense of agency and awareness.

Among the many rewarding experiences during my time with LEX 9I制作厂免费, one high point stands out: "Welcome Day." On this special occasion, we warmly welcomed over one hundred students into the faculty, giving them a taste of what law school has to offer. It was a meaningful and joyous event, witnessing the excitement and curiosity in the eyes of these aspiring legal minds.

Overall, working with LEX has been a meaningful part of my legal education and I鈥檓 excited for further opportunities with LEX in the next academic year."

 Kris Culley (2009 Graduate of James Lyng School)

"The program helps students explore different fields in order to expand their minds more. Being well-rounded expands opportunities.

I liked how we dealt with different legal cases in the various visits.

I particularly liked the visit to 9I制作厂免费 because we got a tour of campus to see what student life is like."
Kris Culley, L.E.X. participant

"The most rewarding experience during my time at the Faculty has been my work with L.E.X. I had the opportunity to run interactive, hands-on workshops with youth from across the Montreal community and engage with them about critical legal perspectives and prospective career paths. I can only hope it was as rewarding for them as it was for me, and I look forward to continuing my work with L.E.X. during the rest of my time at 9I制作厂免费."

-听Rachel McKenzie, LEX Executive Team, 2023-2024

"Volunteering with L.E.X. has been one of, if not the, most rewarding part of my law school experience so far. Witnessing the enthusiasm and eagerness of high school students to learn about the law demonstrated how important the Outreach Program is. The workshops provided a safe and inclusive space for students to explore legal concepts, ask questions, and engage with paths they might not have considered. Knowing how much I would have appreciated workshops like this makes the experience all the more valuable to me. I truly appreciated the opportunity to take part in 9I制作厂免费鈥檚 commitment to addressing educational disparities for those who face barriers to higher education."

Our partner foundation

脌 9I制作厂免费, nous prenons nos engagements envers la communaut茅 et la diversit茅 au s茅rieux.

  • 脡veiller chez les jeunes une curiosit茅 脿 propos du droit et une compr茅hension de sa place dans la vie quotidienne;
  • Introduire les jeunes 脿 des notions juridiques de base, tels les concepts des droits et des obligations;
  • D茅velopper l鈥檃utonomisation et la confiance en soi des jeunes en d茅mystifiant le droit et le syst猫me juridique, et en leur montrant qu鈥檌ls sont capables d鈥檃voir un raisonnement et des arguments juridiques;
  • Aider les jeunes 脿 d茅velopper des outils de raisonnement juridique;
  • Fournir des informations pratiques aux jeunes sur les 茅tudes post-secondaires et juridiques;

Nous recevons environ 150 茅l猫ves de 4-5 茅coles chaque ann茅e dans le cadre de deux journ茅es d鈥檃ccueil s茅par茅es.

L鈥檈ngagement communautaire

"Mon exp茅rience avec L.E.X. a 茅t茅 d茅terminante durant mon secondaire 5.

Poss茅der une vari茅t茅 de talents cr茅e plus d鈥檕pportunit茅s.

-听Rachel McKenzie, LEX Executive Team
