Student-Initiated Seminars (SIS)

The Student-Initiated Seminar (SIS) is a vehicle that is available for students to propose, organize, and run their own seminars, under the supervision of a full-time Faculty member.听

Among the objectives of this vehicle are the following:听

  • To give students an opportunity to reflect on teaching and learning.听

  • To be involved in course design.听

  • To provide space for experimenting with innovative teaching and learning strategies.听

  • Open to students who have completed the first (2) two years of the BCL/JD Program and all required courses, and have a minimum CGPA of 2.7.

  • Students can only take one SIS course during the program, either as a participant or a convenor.

  • A maximum of two undergraduate law students can be convenors.

  • Students interested in convening a student-initiated seminar are encouraged to register in the LAWG 625 鈥� Legal Education Seminar (if offered) either before or concurrently with the SIS.听

  • Students can only take one SIS course during the program, either as a participant or a convenor.听

  • There can only be a maximum of 2 undergraduate law students to participate as a convenor.听

  • Convenors must complete the GA application form in the term prior to their course, have their supervisor sign the form and then submit it to the sao.law [at] mcgill.ca (SAO) for the Associate Dean (Academic)鈥檚 approval then register for WRIT 048, section 002.听

  • Convenors are required to register for the SIS course they are leading in the term they are leading it (LAWG 521, section 002).听

The SIS courses are worth the following credits:听

  • WRIT 048 = 2 credits (register in term prior to SIS course)听

  • LAWG 521 = 3 credits (register in term of teaching course)听

Convenors will earn a total of 5 credits for convening and then participating in their SIS.听

  • The course is evaluated on a pass/fail basis.听

  • The convenors are responsible for grading the assessments completed by the SIS participants, however, the Faculty supervisor has ultimate responsibility for assigning and entering final marks. For more details, please see the document on the Student Affairs Office's myCourse page.听

  • Convenors must complete all course assigned assessments or an equivalent assessment:

    • All the course assigned assessments; OR

    • A reflection essay between 1,500 - 2,000 words worth 100% that would involve the following:

      • It could be co-authored between all convenors or completed separately

      • Answers the question 鈥渨hat did you learn as an SIS Convenor?鈥� This could include:

        • Reflecting on what you would do the same, what you would do differently, what surprised you, what you enjoyed, and what you found challenging.
          Describing how this course fit within your legal education or education more broadly.

  • The Faculty supervisor is responsible for grading the assessments completed by the convenors.听

The supervisor acts as a resource person for the facilitators and other students enrolled in the seminar. Normally, they will not attend the seminar. The supervisor will assist the facilitators in preparing the course outline, reading list, evaluation method and teaching and teaching strategies. They are also responsible for grading the assessments completed by the convenors.听

The convenors are responsible for the conduct of the seminar. However, it is understood that all students enrolled in the seminar are expected to actively participate. For example, the convenors may ask students to take turns leading the discussion. The role of the convenors is not the same as that of the professor in a lecture.听

Student Affairs Office (SAO)听

All standard rules and policies apply to student-initiated seminars. These include the Student Charter, the University's Student Evaluation Policy policies and regulations of the 9I制作厂免费 Faculty of Law. Convenors are strongly encouraged to work closely with the SAO on all administrative aspects of the seminar.听

Le S茅minaire 脿 l'initiative de l'茅tudiant.e (SIS) est un moyen mis 脿 la disposition des 茅tudiants pour proposer, organiser et diriger leurs propres s茅minaires, sous la supervision d'un membre de la facult茅 脿 plein temps.听

Objectifs听

Les objectifs de ce v茅hicule sont notamment les suivants :听

  • Donner aux 茅tudiants l'occasion de r茅fl茅chir 脿 l'enseignement et 脿 l'apprentissage.听

  • Participer 脿 la conception des cours.听

  • Fournir un espace pour exp茅rimenter des strat茅gies d'enseignement et d'apprentissage innovantes.听

Eligibilit茅听

  • Ouvert aux 茅tudiants qui ont termin茅 les deux premi猫res ann茅es du programme BCL/JD et tous les cours requis.听

  • Ont une CGPA d'au moins 2,7.听

  • Les 茅tudiants souhaitant organiser un s茅minaire 脿 l'initiative d'un 茅tudiant sont encourag茅s 脿 s'inscrire au LAWG 625 - S茅minaire d'茅ducation juridique (s'il est propos茅) avant ou en m锚me temps que le SIS.听

Politiques听

  • Les 茅tudiants ne peuvent suivre qu'un seul cours SIS pendant le programme, soit en tant que participant, soit en tant qu'animateur.听听

  • Il ne peut y avoir qu'un maximum de 2 茅tudiants en droit de premier cycle pour participer en tant qu'animateur.听听

  • Les animateurs doivent remplir le formulaire de demande de l'AG au cours du trimestre pr茅c茅dant leur cours, le faire signer par leur superviseur et le soumettre 脿 l'approbation du doyen associ茅 (Affaires universitaires), puis s'inscrire 脿 WRIT 048, section 002.听

  • Les animateurs doivent s'inscrire au cours SIS qu'ils dirigent pendant le trimestre o霉 ils le dirigent (LAWG 521, section 002).听

Cr茅dits听

Les cours associ茅s valent le nombre de cr茅dits suivants :听听

  • WRIT 048 = 2 cr茅dits (s'inscrire dans le trimestre pr茅c茅dant le cours SIS)听

  • LAWG 521 = 3 cr茅dits (s'inscrire au terme du cours d'enseignement)听

  • Les animateurs doivent effectuer toutes les 茅valuations assign茅es au cours ou une 茅valuation 茅quivalente (voir les exigences dans la section proposition).听

Le superviseur听

Le superviseur agit comme personne-ressource pour les animateurs et les autres 茅tudiants inscrits au s茅minaire. Normalement, il ou elle n鈥檃ssistera pas au s茅minaire. Il ou elle aidera les animateurs 脿 pr茅parer le plan du cours, la liste de lectures, la m茅thode d鈥櫭﹙aluation ainsi que les strat茅gies d鈥檈nseignement. Les animateurs听

Les animateurs sont responsables du d茅roulement du s茅minaire. Toutefois, il est entendu que tous les 茅tudiants inscrits au s茅minaire doivent y participer de fa莽on active. Les animateurs pourront, par exemple, demander aux 茅tudiants de mener la discussion 脿 tour de r么le. Le r么le des animateurs n鈥檈st pas celui du professeur dans le cadre d鈥檜n cours magistral.听

Le Secr茅tariat aux 茅tudes en droit (SA脡)听

Tous les r猫glements et politiques habituels s鈥檃ppliquesnt aux s茅minaires initi茅s par les 茅tudiants. Il s'agit notamment de la Charte des 茅tudiants, de la Politique d'茅valuation des 茅tudiants de l'Universit茅, des politiques et r猫glements de la Facult茅 de droit de 9I制作厂免费. Les animateurs sont fortement encourag茅s 脿 collaborer 茅troitement avec le SA脡 pour tout ce qui concerne les aspects administratifs du s茅minaire.听
