Task Force on Indigenous Rematriation, Repatriation and Restitution

TFIR Committee

Background

Across its more than two centuries, 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ has acquired a wide range of historical artefacts of potentially significant cultural relevance to Indigenous Peoples. Regrettably, Indigenous ancestral remains and sacred material relatives were acquired and are now held in different units of the University (e.g. Redpath Museum, Maude Abbott) and at the McCord Museum (as part of a custodial agreement established between 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ and McCord in 1987). In alignment with its focused commitments on truth and reconciliation, 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ recognizes that Indigenous ancestral remains and sacred material relatives (as opposed to ‘objects’) within its collections should be related to in a manner befitting the dignity of the people to whom they belong and in a manner that honours, and responds to, Indigenous ceremonies, perspectives, values and protocols. 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ recognizes that the presence of Indigenous ancestral remains within its University collections has profound and often painful impacts on Indigenous communities.

This initiative directly responds to 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ’s commitments to truth and reconciliation, which are articulated in its 52 Calls to Action Plan. Specifically, the work of the Task Force will advance in 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ’s efforts aimed at addressing its colonial history in the hopes of developing meaningful and respectful relationships with Indigenous communities (cultural and social impacts).

The Task Force will be responsible for the preparation of a comprehensive catalogue of the once-known ancestral remains and sacred material relatives found at the university. Such a catalogue should attempt, to the extent possible, to provide information on the provenance of the remains or sacred material relatives. This Task Force will also recommend principles, policies, and/or procedures by which the University should respectfully proceed with such ancestral remains and sacred material relatives, including those that support Indigenous repatriation/rematriation of remains from both local and distant regions. It is anticipated that the Task Force will complete its mandate by Spring 2026.
