SCHOLARSHIP in the department 1964-2024

This (pre-recorded) presentation uses some online resources to document one aspect of the department鈥檚 contribution to the Advancement of Learning, the university鈥檚 initial mandate. As of Nov 18, the 鈥榮lides鈥, the 鈥榣yrics鈥, and the video recording, along with some additional material, will also be available via the link on听under the heading 鈥

Epidemiology鈥檚 most enduring contributions stem from a commitment to methodological exactness and a disciplined focus on questions that matter for population health. Yet the accelerating shifts in data, technology, and societal structures require us to interrogate whether our current approaches are calibrated for the problems we face. This talk celebrates and reflects on our methodological heritage while pressing us to extend our designs, measures, and analytic strategies to better represent the realities of modern populations. By drawing on richer data environments and more coherent conceptual frameworks, epidemiology can preserve its scientific rigour while offering deeper understanding of the evolving dynamics of population health.

Improving population health involves using data and evidence to inform decision-making about things such as which policies and programs to implement. But how can we ensure that the data and analyses are relevant and useful for specific decisions? This talk will discuss the principles of causal inference, in particular scenarios where there is interest in examining the effects of exposures, policies, or programs on populations of interest. Topics include the need for representative data, the value of randomization, approaches when randomization isn't possible, and how artificial intelligence can support the goals of estimating population effects, while also being mindful of its limitations.

EBOH graduates work in diverse settings, including universities, public health agencies, and industry and increasingly encounter large datasets, work in multidisciplinary teams, and must adapt to new technologies. Graduate programs often emphasize 鈥渟ophisticated methods鈥 over applying methods in complex real-world settings, but many settings require skills in descriptive analysis, data science (programming, software tools), artificial intelligence for analytics and workflow automation, communication, and soft skills like collaboration and project management. Panel members will share their perspectives on the rapidly changing employment context our graduates are entering and reflect on how EBOH programs should evolve so that graduates can continue to advance science and impact population health.

The department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health is a unique institution, with strength in statistical and epidemiological methods, strong connections with clinical and public health communities, and an exceptional record of teaching and research. In 2019, the School of Population and Global Health was formed, and EBOH became a core department within the School along with the departments of Equity, Ethics, and Policy and of Global and Public Health. I will briefly review this history and discuss opportunities for EBOH that arise because of the School. The School offers research, teaching, and experiential learning that will broaden the opportunities for researchers and students in EBOH. I will describe already existing opportunities and look to the future at what we might develop as the School continues to take shape. This will be followed by a panel discussion with Chairs of the School鈥檚 three departments.
