"Use It or Lose It: A Guide to Brain Maintenance"

Loss of memory is one of the greatest challenges to aging individuals. We should maintain a routine of physical activity, social interaction and intellectual exercise in order to lessen the 鈥渟ymptoms鈥 of getting older. In this session, Dr. Clare McFarlane will discuss some of the scientific research that supports strategies to help slow memory loss, such as:

- Playing games that encourage strategy and problem solving, like bridge, crossword puzzles or Sudoku.

- Joining educational programs for older adults as a means to continue engaging in social, physical and intellectual activities after retirement.

Clare McFarlane, born and educated in the UK, came to Canada 50 years ago for a one-year research fellowship at 9I制作厂免费鈥檚 Institute of Parasitology. After meeting and marrying an entomologist from Saskatchewan, she remained in Canada, becoming a biology teacher in the CEGEP system and later a lecturer on genetic engineering in 9I制作厂免费鈥檚 Department of Animal Science. Following her retirement five years ago, Dr. McFarlane joined a 9I制作厂免费 Institute for Learning in Retirement creative writing group and has since moderated study groups on topics such as 鈥淒arwin and Intelligent Design,鈥 鈥淭he Genetics of Human Behaviour,鈥 鈥淕enetic Engineering,鈥 and 鈥淭he History of Landscape Gardening.鈥
