Introduction to High Risk Breast Clinic (HRBC):

While the average woman has a 12% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer, women with atypical breast biopsies, a personal history of chest wall radiation or a genetic predisposition to breast cancer can have an elevated absolute risk that ranges from 40 - 80%. For these women, individualized risk assessment, annual surveillance, and risk reducing strategies can markedly decrease the risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer. The HRBC is designed to ensure high-risk patients undergo appropriate high-risk screening in accordance with current guidelines, and provides access to pharmacologic and surgical prevention options. In addition, patients are provided with referrals to relevant medical services, educational resources, and lifestyle interventions to optimize their risk reduction. Patients also have the opportunity to participate in research studies that focus on quality of life, breast cancer prevention, and long-term health outcomes.

Objective:

The objective of the High Risk Breast Clinic is to provide screening and clinical surveillance to women who are at an elevated risk of developing breast cancer. The clinic is also designed to provide supportive counselling and prevention strategies that can help lower risk in high-risk patients.
