There are several systemic barriers in place preventing some nurse s from entering and staying in nursing in Canada and beyond. A lack of und erstanding of equity\, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is one such barrier. For example\, the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario recently releas ed their call-to-action to tackle anti-black racism in Ontario (and Canada ) and the majority of the recommendations relate to education and support of future Black nurses in Canada as well as their non-Black colleagues and leaders. Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare (SBNH) is both a philosop hy and a value-driven approach to guide educators\, clinicians\, and leade rs. SBNH aims to transform the healthcare system by humanizing healthcare through knowledgeable and compassionate care. The topic of this panel disc ussion will be exploring EDI through the SBNH lens as it relates to nursin g education and the workforce. The learning objective of this panel is to share how SBNH can be used as a lens to educate undergraduate and postgrad uate nurses on the importance of EDI-focused nursing spaces. There will be three topics\, each with their own presentation. Topic 1 will describe wh at SBNH (and SBNH-L(eadership)) is and how it relates to EDI. As an introd uctory topic\, we will describe SBNH and how its 4 foundations and 8 value s relate to EDI in nursing education and leadership. The introduction will be followed by two presentations on the topic of EDI through an SBNH lens at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels\, as a commitment to ED I requires a lifelong educational approach. Topic 2 will provide an exampl e of an undergraduate training exercise which asked students to rethink th eir approach to a patient situation as it related to EDI. Specifically\, t his assignment invited students to recognize the potential changes in reso urce access and necessary alterations to the clinical management of specif ic cases to ensure culturally informed care and equitable practice. Finall y\, topic 3 will provide an example of a postgraduate training program on SBNH-L focused on EDI. Postgraduate nurses were provided SBNH-L training w hich included a dedicated module on EDI. The nurses were later invited to share their experience with the module as well as their personal views on EDI through a series of semistructured interviews.\n\n \n\n \n DTSTART:20230529T114500Z DTEND:20230530T213000Z LOCATION:CA\, NL\, St. John's SUMMARY:CASN 2023: Educating nurses on EDI through SBNH Symposium URL:/strengths-based-nursing-healthcare/channels/event /casn-2023-educating-nurses-edi-through-sbnh-symposium-346227 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
