Now that you have a grasp on how much money you need, this workshop will focus on the "deal". You'll learn what a venture capital fund is, its structure and how they operate, and what venture capitalists (VCs) look for in an early-stage innovation-driven venture. You'll also learn about the typical elements of a term sheet in connection with equity investments and simple agreements for future equity (SAFEs), and caveats when raising money. Finally, we'll explain how a capitalization table works and finish off with a brief overview of minority shareholder rights.

Just finished your coursework, comps, and prospectus and are feeling lost? You're not alone. The transition to independent research and writing can feel uncertain and isolating--but it doesn't have to.

Join us for a half-day retreat designed to help you set goals, stay motivated, and manage your time as you begin the dissertation phase. Through three interactive sessions and a relaxed coffee hour, you'll gain practical tools and connect with fellow students across the program.

Schedule:

  1. Getting off the Ground, 75min (9:00am to 10:15am)
    Develop an individualized timeline for your research and dissertation writing along with an action plan. Explore strategies for setting goals, tracking progress, and maintaining motivation, as well as encourage planning for well-being.
  2. First Steps in Writing, 60min (10:30am to 11:30am)
    Learn practical strategies for getting started with dissertation writing, managing large writing projects, and building sustainable writing habits.
  3. Getting the Mentorship You Need, 45min (11:45am to12:30pm)
    Discover how to make the most of supervisory relationships, including such topics as best practices in communication, setting expectations, how to request and receive feedback, and cultivate a broader support network.
  4. Closing Community Café, 60min (12:30pm to 1:30pm)
    The day will end with a casual coffee hour, with light catered refreshments provided by GPS, to foster informal connections with faculty and university staff. Invited representatives from key services (e.g. 9I制作厂免费 librarian, LWA, CaPS) will be on hand to answer questions.

By understanding the limits of human visual and auditory language processing, participants learn how to work within them. This workshop teaches: 1) strategic PowerPoint skills that make slides easier to process and more cohesive, 2) how to control audience attention, and 3) how to best test key visuals before presenting.
