The panel will feature two 30-minute TE D-like talks\, followed by a 30-minute Q&A session\, where you will have t he opportunity to ask questions and engage with the speakers.\n\nTopics & Speakers\n\n1) Quantum Hardware: Networks for the Future of Quantum Comput ing and Quantum Communication – Bill Coish (Professor at 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ )\n\nAbout the Talk: Large-scale quantum computers may help us to better u nderstand almost every area of basic science (including chemistry\, materi als\, basic physics\, and artificial intelligence). As the prospect of lar ge-scale quantum computers comes closer to reality\, there is also the dan ger that quantum computers could be used to crack widespread encryption sc hemes. An alternative to classical encryption schemes that are vulnerable to quantum computers would be to use quantum networks that are invulnerabl e to quantum computers. Similar quantum networks will also likely be neces sary for the further advancement of quantum computers. I will discuss some of the approaches being used in industry and academia to realize massive quantum networks for these two applications (quantum computing and quantum communication)\, with a focus on the hardware\, and I will discuss some o f the potential implications for society.\n\n2) Is Quantum Information a F riend or a Foe to Privacy? – Claude Crépeau (Professor at ÉTS)\n\nAbout th e Talk: Privacy has long been a critical concern\, and in today's informat ion age\, it is more pressing than ever. In our modern society\, privacy i s an ongoing consideration in daily activities\, from internet banking tra nsactions to online government interactions. The protection of medical rec ords and online gambling both involve significant privacy aspects that req uire long-term safeguarding.\n\nSince the 1980s\, Montréal has played a ce ntral role in the tango performed by privacy and quantum information. Whil e quantum computers pose a significant threat to traditional privacy prote ction tools in the near future\, quantum communication emerges as a powerf ul ally in safeguarding privacy.\n\nIn this talk I will recount the early days of the love/hate relationship between these two fields\, offering an insider’s perspective from a place I have called home for the past 40 year s. I will also give a modern perspective on the billion-dollar industry of privacy that is emerging in the quantum era.\n\nDate: Wednesday\, March 2 6th\, 2025\n\nTime: 7:00 – 8:30 PM\n\nLocation: ENGMC 304\, McConnell Engi neering Building\, 3480 University St\, Montréal\n\nFacebook event: https: //www.facebook.com/share/18AR2u4YpJ/\n\nYouTube Livestream: https://youtub e.com/live/me7ycU51obI?feature=share\n\nThe event is free and open to ever yone.
