In this work, they report a functional role for myostatin as an endocrine hormone that directly promotes pituitary follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) synthesis and thereby ovarian function in mice. Previously, this FSH-stimulating role was attributed to other members of the transforming growth factor-β family, the activins. Their results both challenge activin's eponymous role in FSH synthesis and establish an unexpected endocrine axis between skeletal muscle and the pituitary gland.
Thu, 20 Mar 2025 17:56:32 +0000 admin 2259 at /sbms New publication from the Bui Lab in Current Biology on cilia tip structure /sbms/channels/news/new-publication-bui-lab-current-biology-cilia-tip-structure-366023
Motile cilia are specialized organelles essential for cell movement and fluid flow, driven by the beating of their internal cytoskeleton called the axoneme. At the core of the axoneme lies the central pair (CP) of microtubules, which features a distinct distal tip structure critical for motility. However, the proteins stabilizing this region have remained largely unknown.
Mon, 14 Jul 2025 16:16:09 +0000 admin 2258 at /sbms MIMM Undergraduate U0 & U1 Orientation Session /sbms/channels/event/mimm-undergraduate-u0-u1-orientation-session-366302
Attention U0 & U1 Students!
Join us for the MIMM Annual Undergraduate Orientation
Mon, 11 Aug 2025 16:29:01 +0000 admin 2248 at /sbms Congratulations to Sabrina Romanelli/PhD3 and Tara Shomali/PhD4 in Dr. Jean-Francois Trempe's lab, who have been awarded the FRQS doctoral scholarship /sbms/channels/news/congratulations-sabrina-romanelliphd3-and-tara-shomaliphd4-dr-jean-francois-trempes-lab-who-have-366055
Sabrina Romanelli (PhD3) and Tara Shomali (PhD 4) were awarded the FRQS doctoral scholarship ("Bourses de doctorat en recherche - volet régulier”). This competitive 2-yr $40,000 award was given to 11 exceptional doctoral trainees across Canada working on Parkinson’s disease. Sabrina’s project aims to elucidate the mechanism of PINK1 activation on damaged mitochondria via interactions with the translocation machinery. Her work will help us understand how Parkinson-associated genetic variants impair PINK1’s function.
Mon, 17 Mar 2025 13:58:26 +0000 admin 2212 at /sbms Congratulations to Danielle Simons-PhD2 in Dr. Jean-Francois Trempe's lab, who has been awarded the 2025 Max Eivaskhani Memorial Fellowship from CRBS /sbms/channels/news/congratulations-danielle-simons-phd2-dr-jean-francois-trempes-lab-who-has-been-awarded-2025-max-366054
Danielle Simons (PhD2) has been awarded the 2025 Max Eivaskhani Memorial Fellowship from the Centre de Recherche en Biologie Structurale (CRBS).
