Zhou received the inaugural $30,000 Banting-Canerector聽Foundation Discovery Award,聽established聽to support investigators focused on Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD),聽diseases that cause a defect in聽the human body鈥檚聽connective聽tissue.聽
鈥淚t is a tremendous honor to receive the prestigious Banting Discovery Award,鈥� says Professor Zhou. 鈥淭his support will advance our research to unravel the complex determinants of EDS and HSD. Zhou and her research team aim to uncover the causes of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos聽Syndrome (hEDS)鈥攖he most common subtype of EDS聽and one that is poorly understood.聽The connective tissue disorder causes聽a聽wide range聽of physical and psychological symptoms, including chronic pain, fatigue, joint instability, depression, and anxiety. There is currently no cure for聽hEDS, and treatment options聽remain聽limited to symptom management.聽
Zhou鈥檚 research program will study individuals with聽hEDS聽and their family members across Quebec. Using advanced tools to analyze genes, proteins, and metabolites, her team聽will聽identify聽the genetic, environmental, and metabolic factors that contribute to the disorder鈥攍aying the groundwork for more targeted聽and effective聽approaches to diagnosis,聽treatment, and聽management.聽
Zhou聽leads聽the Population Genomics and Multi-Omics lab聽which is聽under the umbrella of聽the聽Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Genomic Medicine聽at 9I制作厂免费.聽She is also a member of the Qualitative Life Sciences Program聽and an Investigator at聽9I制作厂免费's聽Victor Phillip聽Dahdaleh聽Institute of Genomic Medicine.聽
