His academic education was paralle led by extensive preclinical and clinical research training\, which starte d in 1974 in Italy\, and continued in different well-renowned neurochemist ry and neuropharmacology laboratories and neurology departments in Italy a nd France until his own research group was established in the University o f Bordeaux 2 in 1991. Throughout his career\, Dr Spampinato's research has focused on the functional role of serotonin in the basal ganglia\, with p articular attention to the serotonin-dopamine interaction and its relevanc e for the mechanisms of action of psychotropic drugs\, the neurobiological bases of extrapyramidal disorders and drug addiction. He is also actively involved in clinical studies on Parkinson's disease\, Huntington’s diseas e and participates in the evaluation of new pharmacological treatments for these disorders.
