Appointment of the Academic Director for the 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ Sustainability Park

It is my pleasure to announce that Rees Kassen has been appointed Academic Director for the 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ Sustainability Park, effective Jan. 1, 2026. Ìý

As Academic Director, Prof. Kassen will refine the strategic academic plan for the Park. He will be responsible for developing an academic roadmap that will guide current work, prior to the completion of the new spaces, and establish clear objectives for the first full year of operation. This includes the collaborative development of opportunities for scholarly engagement across the University and oversight of the Academic Community of Practice. â¶Ä¯Ìý

In his new role, Prof. Kassen will work with Teaching and Academic Planning; Research and Innovation; and faculty leadership to establish a comprehensive occupancy and research support strategy for the Park. Additionally, he will collaborate with University Advancement and Communications and Institutional Relations to advance and share the Park's value and objectives with internal and external stakeholders. Ìý

Prof. Kassen is currently Director of the Trottier Institute of Science and Public Policy.  A professor of evolutionary biology in the Department of Biology, and Scientific Director of the Coronavirus in the Urban Environment Initiative, he is also a faculty member in the Max Bell School of Public Policy. Ìý
