Her trajectory serves as the pivotal link between the English pastora lism of the early twentieth century and the high-modernist Manchester Scho ol of the late twentieth century. By the 1960s\, her style had “matured” i nto a distinctly lyrical serialism. In this presentation I examine the cre ative process of Lutyens’ 1960s serialism through score analysis and sketc h study of three works: Présages (1963)\, In The Temple Of A Bird’s Wing ( 1965)\, and And Suddenly It’s Evening (1966). First\, I present post-tonal analyses centered on row structure\, anomalies (repetition\, reordering)\ , inter-row patterns\, texture\, and the interaction of serial and non-ser ial techniques. Second\, I compare these analyses with primary sources inc luding row charts\, sketches and autograph manuscripts. Bringing these str ands together\, the study highlights the compositional processes underpinn ing Lutyens’ distinctive serialism.\n\nBiography: Aidan McGartland is a do ctoral candidate in music theory at 9I where he studies the serialism of Elisabeth Lutyens. Aidan’s research centres on twentieth-cen tury music analysis\, especially works by Benjamin Britten\, Maurice Ravel \, Igor Stravinsky and Margaret Sutherland. He holds prior degrees from th e Universities of Melbourne and Oxford.\n\nThe Doctoral Colloquium is open to all.\n DTSTART:20250917T203000Z DTEND:20250917T220000Z LOCATION:A-832\, Elizabeth Wirth Music Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1E3\, 527 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Doctoral Colloquium (Music) | Aidan McGartland URL:/music/channels/event/doctoral-colloquium-music-ai dan-mcgartland-367625 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
