Nelson Lee has enjoyed a multifaceted career as a performer, pedagogue, and collaborator. As first violinist of the Jupiter String Quartet for over 20 years, he has had the opportunity to perform at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Jordan Hall, the Kennedy Center, Wigmore Hall, the Bellas Artes in Mexico City, and Sejong Hall in Seoul. First prize winners of the Eighth International Banff String Quartet Competition, the Jupiter Quartet has been one of the leading ensembles of its generation, performing extensively throughout North America and abroad. The quartet has been a member of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society Bowers Program and received the 2008 Avery Fisher Career Grant as well as Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award in 2007. Additional highlights include performances of the Beethoven string quartet cycle at the Aspen Music Festival and School, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Festival de Lanaudiere in Quebec.Ìý

As a member of the Jupiter Quartet, Nelson has recorded albums for Azica Records, Marquis Classics records, and Deutsche Gramophone. In 2024, the Jupiters recorded their most recent album in collaboration with the grammy winning producer Judith Sherman. This disc will feature world premiere recordings of Michi Wiancko’sÌýTo Unpathed Waters, Undreamed Shores, Stephen Taylor’sÌýChaconne/Labyrinth, and Kati Agócs'sÌýImprimatur, all of which were commissioned by the Jupiter Quartet.Ìý

An active and devoted teacher, Nelson was a member of the faculty at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign School of Music for the past 12 years. He has given masterclasses at numerous institutions and festivals around the country including the Peabody Conservatory, Cleveland Institute of Music, Northwestern University, San Francisco Conservatory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University, Aspen Music Festival, Madeline Island Music Camp, and Music at Menlo. As a member of the Jupiter String Quartet, he has served on the faculty of the Bowdoin Festival and Taos School of Music.

Nelson is currently a Visiting Scholar at the Schulich School of Music of 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ. He greatly values his role as a mentor for the next generation of musicians and is deeply devoted to helping students find their path in the rapidly evolving world of music and art. Nelson comes from a family of musicians; his parents are both pianists and his twin sisters Andrea and Alicia play the cello and clarinet. His wife, Denise Djokic, is a cellist, with whom he collaborates often.
