However\, unconventional presynaptic NMDARs (preNMDARs) which regulate both long-term and short-ter m plasticity at several synapse types have also been found. A lack of suff iciently specific experimental manipulations and a poor understanding of h ow preNMDARs signal have contributed to long-standing controversy surround ing these receptors. Our recent work indicates that\, whereas ionotropic p reNMDARs signaling controls evoked release\, spontaneous release is regula ted by metabotropic NMDAR signaling.
