November 11, 2025 |聽The听惭辞苍迟谤别补濒听Gazette reported on a case involving a Montreal West high school student who was disciplined after posting comments critical of Israel on her private social media account. The student鈥檚 family argues that the school violated her right to freedom of expression and plans to file a complaint with the Quebec Human Rights Tribunal, while the English Montreal School Board maintains that the posts breached its anti-bullying policy.

In response, Pearl Eliadis said that anti-bullying policies cannot rely solely on whether someone is offended by another person鈥檚 words. She explained that if disciplinary measures are imposed without clear, objective criteria, such restrictions on speech could face legal challenge. Eliadis added that recent court decisions have underscored the importance of protecting freedom of expression in educational settings, particularly when it comes to political speech, which remains one of the most strongly protected forms of expression in Canadian law.
