In many situa tions\, this is due to the presence of non-trivial currents in the system. Two spectacular examples are hurricanes and the sun. In the realm of Mark ov chains\, NESS are just non-reversible invariant measures. One character istic feature of NESS is the presence of long-range correlations. A mathem atically tractable family of NESS is the family of reaction-diffusion mode ls\, a subclass of interacting particle systems.
