True trees on the 2-sphere are a special case in Grothendieck's theory of dessins d'enfant\, where a graph on a topological surface induces a conformal structure on that surf ace. I will recall the connection between dessins\, equilateral triangulat ions and branched coverings (Belyi's theorem). I will also describe some r ecent applications of these ideas to holomorphic dynamics: approximating s ets by polynomial Julia sets\, finding meromorphic functions with prescrib ed postcritical orbits\, constructing finite type dynamical systems on hyp erbolic Riemann surfaces\, building wandering domains for entire functions \, and estimating the fractal dimensions of transcendental Julia sets. The re will be many pictures and few proofs.\n\nFor Zoom meeting information p lease email dmitry.jakobson [at] mcgill.ca\n DTSTART:20220211T193000Z DTEND:20220211T203000Z SUMMARY:Chris Bishop (Stony Brook) URL:/mathstat/channels/event/chris-bishop-stony-brook- 337456 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
