Gromov sho wed that a variant of this notion called simplicial volume gives a lower b ound for the volume of M with respect to any (normalized) Riemannian metri c. The heart of his proof factors through the dual notion of bounded cohom ology. I will define bounded cohomology of discrete groups illustrated by some examples coming from computing the volumes of geodesic simplices in h yperbolic space. Although bounded cohomology is often an unwieldy object e vading computation\, we give some conditions for volume classes to be non- vanishing in low dimensions. We then ask\, 'When do higher dimensional vol ume classes vanish?'\n\n \n DTSTART:20200219T200000Z DTEND:20200219T210000Z LOCATION:Room 1104\, Burnside Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0B9\, 805 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:James Farre (Yale University) URL:/mathstat/channels/event/james-farre-yale-universi ty-320452 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
