As usual\, there will be pizza.\n\n \n\nThis week\, Adrien Abgrall will talk to us about topological dynamics and Ramsey theory:\n\n  \n\nA topological group is said to be 'extremely amenable' when any (conti nuous) action of it on a compact Hausdorff space has a global fixed point. Apart from the trivial group\, very few extremely amenable groups were kn own until in 1998\, V.G. Pestov published a proof of extreme amenability w ith a surprising ingredient : a well known theorem of Ramsey about colorin gs of finite sets. From there\, the method was generalised by Kechris\, Pe stov and Todorcevic in 2005\, building the foundations of a deep correspon dence between the actions of topological groups on compact sets\, and a re alization of those groups as automorphism groups of structures which satis fy 'Ramsey properties'\, that is to say where in any coloring (in a sense to be defined) one can find arbitrary monochromatic substructures. We will try to present all the key ideas underlying this unexpected correspondenc e\, which has been interestingly refined since\, and see how it provides n umerous examples of extremely amenable groups. \n\n \n\nSee you all there! \n\n \n\nAll graduate students are invited. As with all talks in the gradu ate student seminar\, this talk will be accessible to all graduate student s in math and stats. This seminar was made possible by funding from the Mc Gill Mathematics and Statistics Department and PGSS.\n\n \n DTSTART:20190322T170000Z DTEND:20190322T180000Z LOCATION:Room 1025\, Burnside Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0B9\, 805 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Mathematics & Statistics Graduate Student Seminar: topological dyna mics and Ramsey theory URL:/mathstat/channels/event/mathematics-statistics-gr aduate-student-seminar-topological-dynamics-and-ramsey-theory-295558 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
