All-important examples are the modular curve\, mor e general Shimura varieties\, and the space of lattices in the Euclidean s pace of a fixed dimension. In this talk we will discuss questions about eq uidistribution of arithmetic objects on homogeneous spaces. These objects often arise as periodic orbits of actions by an algebraic group. Some of t he most interesting actions on homogeneous spaces\, from an arithmetic poi nt of view\, are those of diagonalizable groups\, viz. algebraic tori. The y are related\, inter alia\, to Galois orbits of special points on Shimura varieties\, such as the Heegner points on the modular curve. These action s also generalize the geodesic flow on a hyperbolic manifold.\n\n\n  \n\nTh e orbits of diagonalizable group actions on homogeneous spaces remain myst erious. I will review several outstanding questions about equidistribution of periodic orbits for higher rank diagonalizable groups and some major c hallenges they pose. I will then discuss recent progress based on a fusion of ideas from homogeneous dynamics\, arithmetic and automorphic forms.\n DTSTART:20190124T210000Z DTEND:20190124T220000Z LOCATION:Room 708\, Burnside Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0B9\, 805 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Ilya Khayutin - Princeton URL:/mathstat/channels/event/ilya-khayutin-princeton-2 93609 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
