During the decade\, through various activities\, we built expertise and also collaborative li nks with the School of Biological Sciences. A main achievement is that sin ce 2013 the Department hosts a DST/NRF Research Chair in Mathematical Meth ods and Models in Bioengineering and Biosciences. The areas of application s of our research are typically related to challenges Africa is facing. I will discuss two such applications: (i) Mating disruption and mass male an nihilation technique for insect control. This modelling work relates to th e need to control the invasion of cossid moth (native species) into eucaly ptus (not native species) forestry plantations with strong negative impact on the industry. (ii) Sterile insect technique for control of mosquito po pulations. The work is linked to the Institute of Sustainable Malaria Cont rol at our University and is in collaboration with CIRAD at Reunion island \, France. From a mathematical point of view both models have bi-stable dy namics\, which allow for designing efficient control strategies using mini mal resources.\n DTSTART:20181210T210000Z DTEND:20181210T220000Z LOCATION:Room 1104\, Burnside Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0B9\, 805 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Roumen Anguelov\, University of Pretoria URL:/mathstat/channels/event/roumen-anguelov-universit y-pretoria-292377 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
