A fundamental problem (with implications even f or experimental science) is to determine their properties upon perturbatio n of their initial conditions. I will describe two such solutions: Minkows ki spacetime\, which is a model for regions of the universe without matter or energy content\; and the Kerr--de Sitter family of spacetimes describi ng (rotating) black holes. In recent work\, in parts joint with A. Vasy\, we prove global existence and obtain a precise asymptotic description of p erturbations of these spacetimes. I will explain these results and indicat e the role played by modern microlocal and spectral theoretic techniques i n our proofs.\n DTSTART:20181207T210000Z DTEND:20181207T220000Z LOCATION:Room PK-5115 \, CA\, UQAM\, 201 Ave. President-Kennedy SUMMARY:Peter Hintz\, MIT URL:/mathstat/channels/event/peter-hintz-mit-292219 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
