Dur ing the decade\, through various activities\, we built expertise and also collaborative links with the School of Biological Sciences. A main achieve ment is that since 2013 the Department hosts a DST/NRF Research Chair in M athematical Methods and Models in Bioengineering and Biosciences. The area s of applications of our research are typically related to challenges Afri ca is facing. I will discuss two such applications: (i) Mating disruption and mass male annihilation technique for insect control. This modelling wo rk relates to the need to control the invasion of cossid moth (native spec ies) into eucalyptus (not native species) forestry plantations with strong negative impact on the industry. (ii) Sterile insect technique for contro l of mosquito populations. The work is linked to the Institute of Sustaina ble Malaria Control at our University and is in collaboration with CIRAD a t Reunion island\, France. From a mathematical point of view both models h ave bi-stable dynamics\, which allow for designing efficient control strat egies using minimal resources.\n DTSTART:20181210T210000Z DTEND:20181210T220000Z LOCATION:Room 1104\, Burnside Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0B9\, 805 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Roumen Anguelov (University of Pretoria) URL:/mathstat/channels/event/roumen-anguelov-universit y-pretoria-292101 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
