We will see how this allows one to assign convex bodies to projectiv e algebraic varieties encoding important 'intersection theoretic' data. Ap plying inequalities from convex geometry to these bodies (e.g. Brunn-Minko wski) one immediately obtains Hodge inequalities from algebraic geometry. This is in the heart of theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies. It generalizes t he extremely fruitful correspondence between toric varieties and convex po lytopes\, to arbitrary varieties. We then discuss connection with symplect ic (and Kahler) geometry and in particular regarding these bodies as image s of moment maps for Hamiltonian torus actions. For 'spherical varieties' (or 'multiplicity-free spaces') these constructions become very concrete a nd they bring together algebraic geometry\, symplectic geometry and repres entation theory. For the most part the talk is accessible to anybody with just a basic knowledge of algebra and geometry\n DTSTART:20180125T210000Z DTEND:20180125T220000Z LOCATION:Room 1205\, Burnside Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0B9\, 805 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Kiumars Kaveh\, University of Pittsburgh URL:/mathstat/channels/event/kiumars-kaveh-university- pittsburgh-284048 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
