Mathematic ally\, it required a detailed numerical simulation of interaction and coll ision of two black holes. Physically\, it required the construction of ult ra-sensitive detectors which are able to capture gravitational waves emitt ed as a result of collision of two massive black holes. The detection of t he gravitational waves provided another compelling confirmation of Einstei n's general relativity formulated exactly 100 years before. We discuss som e basics of mathematical formalism involved in the study of gravitational waves and give a brief review of the experimental setup used in LIGO detec tors.  \n DTSTART:20170309T170000Z DTEND:20170309T180000Z LOCATION:Room LB-921-04\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3G 1M8\, Library Building C oncordia\, 1400 de Maisonneuve West SUMMARY:Dr. D.
