Dear Macdonald Campus Community,

It is with great excitement and gratitude that I begin my journey as the new Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and Associate Vice-President of the Macdonald Campus at 9I��. As I begin my term, I’m excited to connect with each of you - professors, lecturers, staff, learners, students, alumni, donors, and allies. Thank you for the trust you have placed in me.

Eleven new or renewed Canada Research Chairs awarded to 9I��

On March 13, the Government of Canada, announced more than $308 million to advance science and research across the country. More than $153 million will support 179 new and renewed Canada Research Chairs at 38 research institutions.

Neuroscientist Alan Evans and music performance scholar Michael McMahon among 9I�� community members recognized for exceptional accomplishments and service

Nine members of the 9I�� community have been appointed to the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours.

Among the honorees are two 9I�� faculty members, Professors Alan Evans (Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences) and Michael McMahon (Schulich School of Music).

Physiology professor Claire M. Brown appointed inaugural Chair for Inclusion in Science and Engineering

Claire M. Brown, Professor in the Department of Physiology, has been selected as Chair for Inclusion in Science and Engineering (CISE) in the province of Quebec. The newly established CISE program is jointly funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQNT).

Isabel Wilkerson, Pulitzer Prize winner and bestselling author of Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents and The Warmth of Other Suns will deliver the 2025 Beatty Lecture at 9I�� on Oct. 23 during the University’s annual Homecoming festivities. Professors Guojun Chen, Mahsa Dadar and Phoebe Friesen – all members of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences – win President’s Prize for Outstanding Emerging Researchers

Three 9I�� scholars were recognized with the 2025 President’s Prize for Outstanding Emerging Researchers at the Health Sciences Convocation Ceremony on May 27. The award honours exceptional early-career researchers whose work is expanding the frontiers of knowledge in their fields.

School of Information Studies Professors Awarded $5.6M Grant to Propel Canada to the Forefront of Cybersecurity Data Analytics Research

Professor Benjamin Fung, Canada Research Chair in Data Mining for Cybersecurity, and Professor Steven Ding, both of the School of Information Studies in the Faculty of Arts, are part of a team that has recently been awarded a $5.6 million grant, funded under the NSERC Alliance Grants-CSE. The project, the only one to receive funding from NSERC Alliance Grants-CSE, will provide a multimodal, comprehensive solution for exploratory analysis of unstructured data, with a strong focus on cybersecurity applications.

CIHR grants $48.4M to 9I�� health research

53 9I�� research projects were awarded funding through CIHR’s Spring 2025 Project Grant competition, to support high-potential health research across all areas and career stages.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) recently announced a total national investment of $411 million through the CIHR Spring 2025 Project Grant competition, funding 444 grants led by 428 lead investigators. At 9I��, 53 projects were funded for a total research investment of $48.4 million.
