Biochar is a carbonaceous solid produced by pyrolysis of biomas s and has a highly porous structure suitable for microbial attachment. Usi ng synchrotron X-ray microtomography and multifractal analysis\, we demons trated that the internal structure of softwood pellet biochars consisted o f a highly connected\, homogenous and isotropic network of pores. Furtherm ore\, the diversity\, structure and dynamics of a biochar-immobilized comm unity of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria was assessed using 16S rRNA gene s equencing. The results showed that biochar properties can cause a signific ant shift in biochar-associated communities. Biochar particle size also af fected community structures (alpha and beta diversity) over time. A soil m icrocosm experiment revealed that neither biochar amendment nor inoculatio n with a hydrocarbon-degrading Rhodococcus sp. enhanced the dissipation of petroleum hydrocarbons compared to the control soil after 70 days. Howeve r\, biochar significantly increased alpha diversity in soil communities\, and some biochars caused significant shifts in community composition. Bact erial assemblages on the biochar particles were enriched in Xanthomonadace ae\, Flavobacteriaceae and Sphingobacteriaceae\, and had higher proportion s of Rhodococcus\, suggesting that the inoculant persisted on biochar surf aces. This work contributed novel insights into biochar effects on soil mi crobial communities in contaminated soil. Although these effects did not l ead to an improved hydrocarbon degradation\, the findings provided evidenc e that biochars may be used for the purpose of stimulating specific microb ial taxa.\n\nEveryone in the 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ community is welcome to attend a PhD O ral Defence. Please join us in celebrating the accomplishments of our PhD candidates.\n DTSTART:20200108T141500Z DTEND:20200108T141500Z LOCATION:MS2-022\, Macdonald-Stewart Building\, CA\, QC\, St Anne de Bellev ue\, H9X 3V9\, 21111 Lakeshore Road SUMMARY:PhD Oral Defence: Biochar impacts on soil microbiota and potential application of biochar as an inoculant carrier for bioremediation of petr oleum hydrocarbon contaminated soil URL:/macdonald/channels/event/phd-oral-defence-biochar -impacts-soil-microbiota-and-potential-application-biochar-inoculant-carri er-303834 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
