 Changing societal values and needs\, safety concerns\, and high maintenanc
 e costs are causing their removal to be increasingly considered. Both cons
 tructing and removing dams significantly change river ecology and hydrolog
 y\, and therefore also the provision of ecosystem services. Such changes a
 ffect stakeholders differently\, according to their needs\, values and per
 ceptions of ecosystem services. Understanding these differential impacts i
 s important to ensure effective and equitable decision making\, and as a b
 asis for understanding and resolving any resulting conflict. The aims of t
 his thesis\, therefore\, were to identify and analyse the social demand fo
 r ecosystem services\, and analyse the extent to which social demand for e
 cosystem services underlies stakeholder conflict and how the concept of ec
 osystem services can be used for its resolution.\n\nEveryone in the 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ
