R. J Paré\, MSM\, New Bunswick Innovation Research Chair in Medical Technolog ies – Atlantic Cancer Research Institute\n\nMicrowaves are gaining wider u se in a variety of scientific applications. Currently-used examples will b e reviewed including liquid-phase extraction\, gas-phase extraction\, chem ical synthesis\, and separation processes.  This presentation will attempt to demystify the question as to whether there is such a thing as a specif ic “microwave effect”. Recent efforts and directions in using microwaves a s energy-efficient tools will also be presented. Emphasis will be on non-c onventional non-equilibrium conditions. Finally\, a brief overview of our own program on microwave ablation of tumours will be presented. The purpos e of this seminar is to raise questions\, several of which may (will!!!) r emain unanswered\, thus pointing out at R&D opportunities in that area.\n \nABOUT THE SPEAKER\n\nDr. Paré holds the New Brunswick Innovation Researc h Chair in Medical Technologies.  He held various positions during his car eer\, authored/co-authored over 175 scientific publications\, 13 patents\, and delivered over 450 communications worldwide. Recognized nationally an d internationally for his contribution to the development of the Microwave -Assisted Processes portfolio of technologies he is Adjunct Professor (McG ill University and Université de Moncton)\, Associate Member of the Beatri ce Hunter Cancer Research Institute\, Honorary professor of Kunming Univer sity (China) and Visiting Professor Nankai University (China).\n\nHosted b y the Department of Food Science and Agricultural Chemistry.\n\n \n DTSTART:20171012T140000Z DTEND:20171012T153000Z LOCATION:R4-045\, Raymond Building\, CA\, QC\, St Anne de Bellevue\, H9X 3V 9\, 21111 Lakeshore Road SUMMARY:Microwaves: Sound Science Tools for New Economic Opportunities URL:/macdonald/channels/event/microwaves-sound-science -tools-new-economic-opportunities-271837 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
