E ffective control and prevention of this veterinary helminth\, as well as o ther helminths\, has been primarily by the administration of anthelmintics and it is still the most effective strategy to overcome parasitosis in th e veterinary field. One particular class of anthelmintics is the macrocycl ic lactones (MLs) and this drug class includes the avermectins and milbemy cins. MLs\, also referred as endectocides because of their remarkable effi cacy against ectoparasites and endoparasites\, are fermentation products o f different organisms.  For heartworm\, MLs are the only class of drugs us ed as preventives for more than 26 years. The continuous use of the MLs ha s led to drug resistance in many parasitic nematodes\, and in D. immitis\, ML resistance has very recently been confirmed. In heartworm\, although n o gene has been definitely implicated in ML resistance so far\, preliminar y evidence shows that the presence of two polymorphic loci on D. immitis P -glycoprotein-14 (Dim-Pgp-14) correlated with loss of efficacy of ML anthe lmintics\, suggesting that this Pgp may be involved in ML resistance. ABC transporters such as Pgps modulate drug concentration at the target site a nd therefore can contribute to multidrug resistance. In many parasitic nem atodes\, this protein family has shown a consistent link with ML resistanc e. The first goal of this project was to characterize interaction of MLs\, namely ivermectin (IVM)\, selamectin (SEL)\, moxidectin (MOX) and milbemy cin oxime (MBO) with the expressed nematode transporter and to possibly un derstand the mechanism of ML resistance in D. immitis.\n\nEveryone in the 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ community is welcome to attend a PhD oral defense. Please join us i n celebrating the accomplishments of our PhD candidates.\n\n \n\n \n DTSTART:20160303T140000Z DTEND:20160303T140000Z LOCATION:MS2-022 (Fcaulty Lounge)\, Macdonald-Stewart Building\, CA\, QC\, St Anne de Bellevue\, H9X 3V9\, 21111 Lakeshore Road SUMMARY:PhD Oral Defense: Macrocyclic lactone interactions with a P-glycopr otein and polymorphism in ABC transporter and ion channel genes in Dirofil aria immitis URL:/macdonald/channels/event/phd-oral-defense-macrocy clic-lactone-interactions-p-glycoprotein-and-polymorphism-abc-transporter- 258192 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
