This is because LCF generates energy t hat can lower the coal consumption in the kiln. Biomass fuel originating f rom perennial grass crops and woody materials is LCF that can be converted to clean energy (e.g. heat or steam) via combustion\, which is an indepen dent process from cement production. Meanwhile\, the residual ash from the biomass combustion may be recycled by blending with cement if this ash po ssesses a high pozzolanic activity\, which can reduce the demand for cemen t and accordingly lessen the CO2 emissions associated with cement producti on. Hence\, the overall objectives of this thesis were to 1) investigate t he combustion characteristics of switchgrass (Panicum vigratum L.) compare d to hardwood\; 2) characterize the physiochemical properties of switchgra ss combustion ash\, and assess the strength in mortars made from blended c ement containing up to 20% switchgrass combustion ash content\; 3) and opt imize the combustion conditions to achieve a high energy conversion and as h pozzolanic value simultaneously.\n\nEveryone in the 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ community is welcome to attend a PhD oral defense. Please join us in celebrating the ac complishments of our PhD candidates.
