LING 345 鈥 From Natural Language to Data Science (3 credits)

Posting dates: October 1 to October 14, 2025

Course dates: January 5 to April 14, 2026

Teaching Schedule: Tuesday and Thursday (10:05AM to 11:25AM)

Location: ENGMC 204

Course details: Introduction to language data science, including theoretical approaches and practical skills. Processing, searching, and querying text data; making sense of large corpora; modelling and interpreting psycholinguistic and historical language data; building models of sequences of words; computing similarity between languages; information retrieval and extraction; question answering, and ethics.

Teaching Qualification Requirements: Successful completion of at least PhD Evaluation 1 or equivalent experience. Particularly, the candidate must be able to teach Classification and Regression Analysis using historical language and psycholinguistic data. Familiarity with pandas and scikit is desired as the problem sets involve working with them. Past experience of LING 345/682, LING 620 and computational LING 683 courses at 9I制作厂免费 or related industry experience will be a great asset.

Experience: Classroom teaching experience through previous employment as Teaching Assistant or Course Lecturer for at least 120 hours, or equivalent. Documented research experience could be in computational linguistics, and industry experience in computer science or linguistics is desirable but not required.

Other: For current graduate students, GPA of 3.7 or higher and at least A- in LING 345/682, LING 620 and LING 683 or equivalent.

Position Summary:

A Course assignment includes all or part of the following teaching activities:

a) preparation of the Course and Course plan;
b) delivery of the Course;
c) evaluation of students;
d) submitting to the University a report on student attendance and student grades;
e) supervision of Teaching Assistants or any other teaching support staff;
f) upon request, review of their students鈥 grades;
g) meeting with students, being available to answer questions and give advice concerning Course content and requirements;

Employees shall perform their duties in compliance with the Pedagogical Regulation and as specified in the administrative directives of the Hiring Unit. An Employee shall use appropriate pedagogical methods and material.

Researchers

The Department of Linguistics is pleased to accept applications of researchers who wish to stay in the Department as visiting researchers. A visiting researcher holds a PhD degree, normally holds a permanent position elsewhere, and normally stays in the Department for a maximum of one year. Given limited resources, including limited availability of space and administrative support, the Department is only able to accommodate a small number of visiting researchers each year. Visiting researchers are offered a desk in a shared office as well as access to the 9I制作厂免费 library and email. Unfortunately, the Department is unable to provide visiting researchers with financial support.

How To Apply

Before submitting an application, prospective visiting researchers should have contacted a faculty member in the Department who has agreed to serve as a sponsor.

Applications should include:

  1. A statement of purpose indicating the beginning and ending dates of the visit, the research goals for the visit, as well as the relation of the proposed research to the research of the sponsoring faculty member
  2. A Curriculum Vitae

In particular, visiting researcher applications are due on March 1st for visits beginning the following Fall Term (which starts in September) and July 1st for visits beginning the following Winter Term (which starts in January). Acceptance decisions are communicated to applicants shortly after these deadlines.

Graduate Students

The Department of Linguistics is pleased to accept applications of graduate students who wish to stay in the Department as visiting graduate students. Visiting graduate students are registered in a graduate degree program at another university, and their research interests must connect well to those of the Department.
