BEGIN:VCALENDAR VERSION:2.0 PRODID:-//132.216.98.100//NONSGML kigkonsult.se iCalcreator 2.20.4// BEGIN:VEVENT UID:20250822T124549EDT-5124AX0EVu@132.216.98.100 DTSTAMP:20250822T164549Z DESCRIPTION:The Centre for Human Rights & legal Pluralism presents: a talk With Hoi Kong\n\nAbout the talk \n\nHow should a constitutional order resp ond to deep inequality?  In some constitutional orders\, the pervasiveness of inequality is at the root of complex debates about equality rights\, b ut does not pose an existential risk to the polity.   By contrast\, in oth er polities\, inequality is so pervasive that the existing constitutional order can no longer be considered legitimate.  In these circumstances\, th e task of fashioning a new order can give rise to complex issues of consti tutional design.  Drawing on arguments that Ron Levy\, Ian O’Flynn and I s et out in Deliberative Peace Referendums (Oxford University Press\, 2021)\ , I will argue that the theory of deliberative constitutionalism provides guidance to constitutional designers and counsels resistance to populist i mpulses that arise when the very legitimacy of a constitutional order is q uestioned. \n\nAbout the speaker \n\nProfessor Hoi Kong is the inaugural h older of The Rt. Hon. Beverley McLachlin\, P.C.\, UBC Professorship in Con stitutional Law\, which he assumed in 2018.  He is a Senior Research Fello w at the University of Texas at Austin’s Program on Comparative Constituti onal Studies and a Peter Wall Scholar (2020-2021).  He researches and teac hes in the areas of constitutional\, administrative\, municipal and compar ative law\, and constitutional and public law theory.   \n\nPrior to joini ng the Allard School of Law\, Professor Kong was an Assistant and then Ass ociate Professor at 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ’s Faculty of Law\, where he served a term as Associate Dean (Academic).   He was previously an Assistant Profe ssor of Law\, cross-appointed with the School of Urban Planning at Queen’s University\, and an Associate-in-Law at the Columbia Law School.  Profess or Kong clerked for Justice L’Heureux-Dubé and Justice Deschamps at the Su preme Court of Canada. \n\nIn-person.
