 \n\n鈥淟aw Actually鈥�: Intimacy and Trust\n\nLaw invokes seriousness. One ten
 ds to see it to be objective\, and even impersonal. It 鈥渕ust be public\, u
 niversal\, and reasonable. Emotion\, understood as mere inclination and ba
 sed in a self-interest\, individual perspective\, or self-reference that c
 annot apply to all alike\, is irrelevant and distracting to the obligation
  to do one's duty.鈥� (Meyer\, The Justice of Mercy\, 11). To think like a l
 awyer is to maintain a safe distance from the issue at hand.\n\nYet\, law 
 permeates our relationships. Law regulates intimate issues in personal rel
 ationships (such as those with our parents and our spouses) and also profe
 ssional relationships. Legal norms tend to operate on the basis that we ma
 y or may not trust each other to carry out our respective duties. This ele
 ment of trust also applies to many relationships that are deemed to be of 
 a 鈥渓egal鈥� nature\, such as contracts\, commercial transactions\, and inter
 national relations.\n\nThis conference is an invitation to approach 鈥榣aw鈥� 
 as a more intimate discipline and to engage in legal scholarship as an exe
 rcise in intimacy and trust.\n\nDean Maxwell and Isle Cohen Doctoral Semin
 ar Series in International Law\n\nThe conference will be held in collabora
 tion with the Dean Maxwell and Isle Cohen Doctoral Seminar Series in Inter
 national Law\, which is held in honour of the late Maxwell Cohen and his w
 ife Isle. In 2020\, this seminar will take the form of a half-day panel di
 scussion on international law topics inspired by the conference theme.\n
