Following on the success of their recent book launch\, they will deliver a lecture entitled\, “Public Purpose in International Law: Re thinking Regulatory Sovereignty in the Global Era”.\n\nThis lecture explor es how the public purpose doctrine reconciles the often conflicting\, but equally binding\, obligations that states have to engage in regulatory sov ereignty while honoring host-state obligations to protect foreign investme nt. The lecture examines the multiple permutations and iterations of the p ublic purpose doctrine and concludes that this principle needs to be recon ceptualized to meet the imperatives of economic globalization and of a new paradigm of sovereignty that is based on the interdependence\, and not in dependence\, of states. It contends that the historical expression of the public purpose doctrine in customary and conventional international law is fraught with fundamental flaws that\, if not corrected\, will give rise t o disparities in the relationship between investors and states\, asymmetri es with respect to industrialized nations and developing states\, and\, ul timately\, process legitimacy concerns.\n\nA cocktail reception will follo w.\n\nThis lecture has been accredited for 1.5 hours of Continuing Legal E ducation.\n\nTo register\, kindly RSVP to kuzi.charamba [at] mail.mcgill.c a (subject: RSVP%20Reetz-Martinez-Fraga%20event) .\n DTSTART:20160314T213000Z DTEND:20160314T230000Z LOCATION:NCDH 312\, Chancellor Day Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1W9\, 36 44 rue Peel SUMMARY:Public Purpose in International Law: Rethinking Regulatory Sovereig nty in the Global Era URL:/law/channels/event/public-purpose-international-l aw-rethinking-regulatory-sovereignty-global-era-259439 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
