BEGIN:VCALENDAR VERSION:2.0 PRODID:-//132.216.98.100//NONSGML kigkonsult.se iCalcreator 2.20.4// BEGIN:VEVENT UID:20250822T094335EDT-7865V8TF6P@132.216.98.100 DTSTAMP:20250822T134335Z DESCRIPTION:(En anglais seulement) The Centre for Human Rights & legal Plur alism presents: a talk With Hoi Kong\n\nAbout the talk \n\nHow should a co nstitutional order respond to deep inequality?  In some constitutional ord ers\, the pervasiveness of inequality is at the root of complex debates ab out equality rights\, but does not pose an existential risk to the polity.   By contrast\, in other polities\, inequality is so pervasive that the e xisting constitutional order can no longer be considered legitimate.  In t hese circumstances\, the task of fashioning a new order can give rise to c omplex issues of constitutional design.  Drawing on arguments that Ron Lev y\, Ian O’Flynn and I set out in Deliberative Peace Referendums (Oxford Un iversity Press\, 2021)\, I will argue that the theory of deliberative cons titutionalism provides guidance to constitutional designers and counsels r esistance to populist impulses that arise when the very legitimacy of a co nstitutional order is questioned. \n\nAbout the speaker \n\nProfessor Hoi Kong is the inaugural holder of The Rt. Hon. Beverley McLachlin\, P.C.\, U BC Professorship in Constitutional Law\, which he assumed in 2018.  He is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin’s Program on Comparative Constitutional Studies and a Peter Wall Scholar (2020-2021).  He researches and teaches in the areas of constitutional\, administrative \, municipal and comparative law\, and constitutional and public law theor y.   \n\nPrior to joining the Allard School of Law\, Professor Kong was an Assistant and then Associate Professor at 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ’s Faculty of Law\, where he served a term as Associate Dean (Academic).   He was previo usly an Assistant Professor of Law\, cross-appointed with the School of Ur ban Planning at Queen’s University\, and an Associate-in-Law at the Columb ia Law School.  Professor Kong clerked for Justice L’Heureux-Dubé and Just ice Deschamps at the Supreme Court of Canada. \n\nIn-person.
