Il nous parlera de développement et de démocratie en Afrique.\n\nRésumé\n\n[En anglais seulement] Arguably\, creating a liv eable environment for its citizens is the quintessential dream of every na tion. However\, to attain their dream\, nations all over the world have de signed different\, sometimes contradictory\, approaches. Among the many de bates\, who should come first: democracy or development? It is a perennial question. Should nations give precedence to democratize the polity\, or t hey should deal with economic development first? Or\, as it intuitively ap pears\, are these two pillars of a better society undetachable? These type of questions apropos of democracy and development are floated by scholars and politicians alike.\n\nIn Africa\, when most countries are neither dem ocratic nor economically developed\, the debate over precedence is even ho tter and more divisive. Many African nations are ambivalently looking to t he West and East for a better model system. In the midst of this ambivalen ce and mercurial policy shifts\, citizens of the continent get the short e nd of the stick\, i.e. policy focus.\n\nHence\, in the session\, I will en mesh my personal stories with the academic works regarding the current sta te of the debate in the African continent\, and show how it’s shaping stat e policies and the lives of individuals in the ground.\n\nLe conférencier \n\n[En anglais seulement] Zelalem Kibret is an Ethiopian scholar and blog ger.
