However\, th ese discussions sidestep deeper issues with data used in AI\, including pr oblematic categorizations and the extractive logics of crowdwork and data mining. In this talk\, I make two interventions: first by reframing of dat a as a form of infrastructure\, and as such\, implicating politics and pow er in the construction of datasets\; and secondly discussing the developme nt of a research program around the genealogy of datasets used in machine learning and AI systems. These genealogies should be attentive to the cons tellation of organizations and stakeholders involved in their creation\, t he intent\, values\, and assumptions of their authors and curators\, and t he adoption of datasets by subsequent researchers.\n\nAlex Hanna is a soci ologist and senior research scientist working on the Ethical AI team at Go ogle. Before that\, she was an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Com munication\, Culture\, Information and Technology at the University of Tor onto. Her research centers on origins of the training data which form the informational infrastructure of AI and algorithmic fairness frameworks\, a nd the way these datasets exacerbate racial\, gender\, and class inequalit y.\n\nThis event is part of the 4th Season of the Feminist and Accessible Publishing and Communications Technologies Speaker and Workshop Series\, o rganized by Dr. Alex Ketchum. This event is co-sponsored by the Algorithmi c Media Observatory and Dr. Fenwick Mckelvey.\n Our series was made possibl e thanks to our sponsors: SSHRC\, the Institute for Gender\, Sexuality\, a nd Feminist Studies (IGSF)\, the DIGS Lab\, Milieux\, Initiative for Indig enous Futures\, MILA\, and more (see our website!)\n\nThere is no fee requ ired to attend this event. We will provide captions in english. This event will be recorded and made available on our website after the event.\n DTSTART:20220203T230000Z DTEND:20220204T003000Z SUMMARY:Dr. Alex Hanna on Beyond Bias: Algorithmic Unfairness\, Infrastruct ure\, and Genealogies of Data URL:/igsf/channels/event/dr-alex-hanna-beyond-bias-alg orithmic-unfairness-infrastructure-and-genealogies-data-335417 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
