After establishing his unchallenged authority in the province\, Mehmed Ali Pasha (d. 1848) gradu ally expanded his military and fiscal power in the early 19th century. His relations with Ottoman sultan Mahmud II (r. 1808-1839)\, whose concurrent European-inspired administrative-military reforms had been underway since 1826\, deteriorated after the conclusion of the Greek Revolution. Subsequ ently\, Ottoman central authority and Mehmed Ali Pasha fought two successi ve wars in 1831-33 and 1839-41. Both conflicts were rapidly “international ized” by the Great Powers’ direct and indirect involvement\, and they deci sively re-shaped the Middle East for the next century and beyond.\n The dip lomatic aspects of “First Ottoman-Egyptian War” and Great Powers’ involvem ent have arguably been better studied by the historians of the “Eastern Qu estion”. By using multi-lingual and multi-archival sources\, this paper\, however\, will attempt to provide a detailed political and military accoun t for the conflict. It will also offer a closer examination on the pivotal battles of Homs\, Beylan\, and Konya that ended disastrously for the Otto mans by studying indigenous historical material as well as the physical ge ography of the conflict zones.\n DTSTART:20250312T190000Z DTEND:20250312T210000Z LOCATION:Room 116\, Peterson Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0E6\, 3460 rue McTavish SUMMARY:IOWC Winter Speaker Series - Dr. Veysel Şimşek URL:/history/channels/event/iowc-winter-speaker-series -dr-veysel-simsek-362844 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
