DESCRIPTION:This paper explores why radical mobilizational tactics failed t
 o achieve social and political changes during the 1989 Tiananmen Student M
 ovement. By focusing on historical archives from students\, elites\, and s
 tate institutions\, I argued that student radicalization inadvertently str
 engthens the hard-liner elites\, facilitating the eventual repression. How
 ever\, radical repertoire and actions are political and cultural meaning-m
 aking processes that situate between economic modernization and authoritar
 ian consolidation of Chinese society. The overall project seeks to explore
  conceptual and empirical frameworks that historize social changes after t
 he revolutionary episodes in the 1960s and 1970s.\n\nLight refreshments se
