Meet 2025 Global Health Scholar Maïa Feki

Maïa Feki is a second-year with Professor Tracie Barnett of the Department of Family Medicine. ‭

My name is Maïa Feki, and I am a second-year medical student at 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ’s Outaouais Campus. I worked under the supervision of Dre Tracie Barnett in the Division of Family Medicine on a project exploring how the built environment can be leveraged to promote physical activity in primary care settings.  I was supported by the GHP Director’s Discretionary Fund Award.

As a student researcher, I was involved in patient recruitment and interviews, the development of theoretical models, and qualitative data analysis. We also had the pleasure of interviewing primary care physicians to gain their input on physical exercice prescription. Dre Barnett encouraged us to engage in many facets of the project, including the Park Prescription Project, where we audited parks and analyzed natural spaces through a medical lens. I also contributed to the intervention group, reflecting on how this research could be translated into practical strategies within primary care over the next 5 years.

We were a team of four medical students, which made the experience especially enriching, as we were able to exchange knowledge and collaborate closely. We assisted Raphaela Nikolopoulous, a PhD candidate in the Department of Family Medicine, in her thesis research who guided us through our tasks and generously shared her expertise in research.

I am deeply grateful to Dre Tracie Barnett for the opportunity to contribute to this project, to Dr. Abdul Cadri for his valuable insights from Ghana, and to Raphaela for generously sharing her expertise. I also wish to acknowledge the Undergraduate Global Health Scholars program at 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ for its support over the last months.

Over the summer, I not only gained valuable experience in medical research and data analysis, but also deepened my skills in teamwork and collaboration. This project strengthened my passion for research, and I aspire to integrate it into my future practice as a physician.

9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ is located on land which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous Peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg Nations. 9IÖÆ×÷³§Ãâ·Ñ honours, recognizes, and respects these nations as the traditional stewards of the lands and waters on which peoples of the world now gather. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous Peoples from across Turtle Island. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.
