DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Peatlands at COP26\, received renewed attention for t
 heir potential in regulating global carbon (C) cycles\, with particular em
 phasis on peatland C drainage losses and increased sequestration via resto
 ration (rewetting). While considerable attention has been paid to restorin
 g peatlands in the Northern boreal regions far less is known about the eff
 ects of climate change\, drainage and rewetting on C storage in subtropica
 l and tropical peatlands. Biogeochemical and biological mechanisms that do
 wn-regulate decomposition rates in peatlands will be examined in conjuncti
 on with hydrologic conditions needed to optimize C sequestration and reduc
 e GHG emissions. How the rapidly expanding C market can be used to fund re
 storations by turning black C into gold is discussed.\n
