Marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Dear colleagues,

On behalf of the Department of Family Medicine鈥檚 Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee, we would like to recognize the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed globally on December 3. This day provides an important opportunity to reflect on how we can continue building environments academic, clinical, and administrative where persons with disabilities are valued, supported, and empowered to thrive.

In family medicine, we are guided by principles of person-centred care, community responsiveness, and respect for the diverse lived experiences of those we serve. These same principles must shape how we support one another within our department. Accessibility and inclusion are not only matters of policy, but of everyday practice: how we design our learning spaces, how we communicate, how we collaborate, and how we ensure that everyone can participate fully.

Today, we invite our community to take a moment to consider the visible and invisible barriers that colleagues, learners, patients, and partners may face and how each of us can contribute to a more inclusive and accessible department. Collective awareness and small, meaningful actions play an essential role in fostering a culture where all members feel recognized and supported.

The EDI Committee remains committed to advancing accessibility within the Department of Family Medicine and to promoting practices that honour dignity, autonomy, and belonging for persons with disabilities.
