Why have we blanked out political aspects of organizations tackling societal challenges in management research? To address this question\, we will report on a study on advocacy engagement of social enterprises in se ven countries. The study contributes by theorizing a widespread yet poorly understood practice\, enriching conceptions of market-based activity and hybrid organizing and highlighting the value of phenomenon-based approache s for studying organizations addressing complex societal challenges.\n\n\n About Johanna Mair\n\nJohanna Mair is a Professor of Organization\, Strate gy\, and Leadership at the Hertie School in Berlin. Her research focuses o n the nexus of organizations\, institutions\, and societal challenges. Her recent work centers on mechanisms enabling organizations to transform soc ial systems and progress on social problems. She is the academic editor of Stanford Social Innovation Review and co-directs the Global Innovation fo r Impact Lab at the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society. She has co-directed the Social Innovation + Change Initiative at the Harvard Kennedy School\, has served on the faculty at IESE Business School\, and h as held a visiting position at the Harvard Business School and INSEAD. Her book Innovation and Scaling – How effective Social Entrepreneurs create I mpact (Stanford University Press\, 2017) co-authored with Christian Seelos has won the 2017 Terry McAdam Award at ARNOVA and the 2018 ONE Outstandin g Book Award at the Academy of Management Meeting. Her research has been p ublished in the Academy of Management Annals\, Academy of Management Journ al\, Organization Studies\, Academy of Management Discoveries\, Academy of Management Perspectives\, Journal of Business Venturing\, Journal of Busi ness Ethics\, Research in Organizational Behavior\, Research in the Sociol ogy of Organizations\, Nature Human Behavior\, and Stanford Social Innovat ion Review.
