He earned his Ph.D. at th e LSE and practiced for 13 years as a professional economist in industry a nd government. At the University of Saskatchewan\, he was the Van Vliet Re search Professor\, created and held an NSERC-SSHRC Chair in Managing Techn ological Change in Agriculture\, was director of the virtual College of Bi otechnology\, was founding director of the JSGS.\n\nAbstract\n\nThis webin ar will explore a range of challenges of organizing and governing innovati on in the context of re-search networks\, partnerships\, and innovation sy stems. The generational effort to exploit scale and scope ben-efits of lar ger scale research is now facing transformative change due to the advent o f the massive intercon-nectivity of everything through the Internet of Thi ngs. Structuring these collaborative ventures is challenging at the best o f times\, as search\, negotiation and enforcement costs are significant. T he rewiring of our research system via the IoT will make a difficult proce ss even more complicated. This webinar will review the ideas\, in-centives and institutions that govern this space\, and address some real-world exa mples of governance strate-gies and challenges drawn from research on Cana dian agri-food research efforts.\n\n\nAbout the series\n\nThe Convergent I nnovation Webinar Series will feature cutting edge science\, technology an d innovation in agriculture\, food and health domains as well as in the be havioural\, commercial\, social and complexity sciences.
