The latter are justified to the extent that they are meaningful to humans – in both senses of ‘meaning’\, i.e.\, in the sense of semantics as well a s in the sense of purpose or significance. On one hand\, the data these co mponents manipulate only acquire meaning when mapped to shared human conce ptualizations of the world. On the other hand\, they can only be justified if ethically designed. Cyber-human systems are trustworthy if the interop eration of their components is meaning preserving\, i.e.\, if we are able to semantically interoperate these components\; and transparently demonstr ate (i.e.\, explain) how their interoperation positively contributes to hu man values and goals. In this talk\, I will present a notion of explanatio n termed Ontological Unpacking\, which aims at explaining symbolic domain descriptions (conceptual models\, knowledge graphs\, logical specification s). I show that it is this explanatory nature that is required for semanti c interoperability and\, hence\, trustworthiness. Finally\, I will argue t hat the current trend in XAI (Explainable AI) in which “to explain is to p roduce a symbolic artifact” is an incomplete project as these artifacts ar e not “inherently interpretable”\, and that they should be taken as the be ginning of the road to explanation\, not the end.\n DTSTART:20250108T160000Z DTEND:20250108T180000Z SUMMARY:MCCHE Precision Convergence Webinar Series with Giancarlo Guizzardi URL:/desautels/channels/event/mcche-precision-converge nce-webinar-series-giancarlo-guizzardi-362222 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
